Summary:

This post offers an exciting opportunity to join the highly successful Centre for Computational Imaging and Simulation Technologies in Biomedicine (CISTIB) www.cistib.org within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Sheffield. CISTIB is working at the interface between different areas of computational imaging and modelling: medical image analysis, statistical shape analysis, pattern recognition, image-based computational physiology, and personalised virtual interventions. The Centre hosts academic members from the University of Sheffield as well as Research Fellows, Research Associates, PhD Students and Research Software Engineers forming a cross-disciplinary team.

As a member of the Scientific Software Development team you will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the GIMIAS platform (see http://www.gimias.org ), and the prototypes developed for specific domains based on this platform (AngioSuite, OrthoSuite, CardioSuite & NeuroSuite) as well as the specific prototypes that we develop as part of our involvement in local and international projects.

You will have a degree in a Science, Engineering or Computing discipline (or equivalent experience).

You will have considerable experience in using, supporting and developing scientific applications in one or more of the following areas, to support the production of research outputs (in an academic or service oriented context): Computational engineering, Mathematics or statistics, Scientific visualisation, Biomedical engineering, Computer Vision or Computational Imaging.

You will have excellent computer programming skills/proven experience in scientific software development for multiplatform environments (3+ years) and Substantial knowledge of C++ and Python. Experience in biomedical imaging and biomedical engineering at either MSc or PhD level (or equivalent experience) is desirable.

CISTIB is working at the interface between different areas of computational imaging and modelling: medical image analysis, statistical shape analysis, machine learning, image-based computational physiology, and personalised virtual interventions. The Centre hosts academic and other staff members from the University of Sheffield forming a cross-disciplinary team with affiliation in the Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering departments.


The Centre has had significant funding success in the application area of dementia and vascular cognitive impairment, including the European Commission-funded VPH-DARE@IT (www.vph-dare.eu) and EPSRC-funded OCEAN (www.ocean-mri.org) projects. OCEAN aims to characterise and quantify early differential alterations in brain blood transport and subsequent microstructural tissue damage using one-stop-shop perfusion/diffusion MR GSI incorporating novel MR signal models and optimal MR sequence design based on new human brain histomorphometric data in health and disease.


OCEAN is led by the University of Sheffield in collaboration with the University of Manchester (Professor GJ Parker), Cardiff University (Professor D Jones), University of Antwerp (Professor J Sijbers), and Neurospin (Professor D LeBihan). The post holder will be required to spend time in Cardiff, Paris and Antwerp. .


For this post, we seek a Research Assistant or Research Associate to contribute to the project objectives. She/he will develop novel MRI signal models and imaging sequences for microstructurally accurate perfusion and diffusion MRI. We are seeking a motivated individual with expertise in advanced statistical signal processing, sparse and compressed sensing, and array signal processing in the context of Magnetic Resonance Image acquisition and imaging physics, in general, and diffusion and perfusion MRI, in particular.
